NHL Daily Fantasy Picks and Helper: Wednesday 3/6/24

NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.

Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters.

Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.

Using our projections -- which are powered by numberFire -- as a guide, let's take a look at today's slate to find a goalie, some stacks, and value plays for your NHL DFS lineups on FanDuel.

NHL DFS Picks

Goalie to Target

Ilya Samsonov, Toronto Maple Leafs ($8,200)

With just three games to choose from on today's slate, the goalie selections are not all too exciting. For the first time in what has to be a long time, let's look to target Ilya Samsonov tonight.

Listen, it hasn't been a good season for Samsonov. That much is known. But he's got the best matchup tonight, and that's why it's worth targeting him. Facing off with the Buffalo Sabres has been a good one for goalies this year.

The Sabres have the ability to get a lot of shots but don't put the puck in the net. They rank 11th in the NHL with 31.22 shots for per 60 minutes (SF/60) but are only scoring 2.92 goals for per 60 minutes (GF/60) -- which is actually higher than their expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60) total of 2.91.

Samsonov is coming off a start where he made 32 stops on 35 shots against the New York Rangers. It's not necessarily a game to write home about, but it's a strong effort to build on heading into tonight. His season stats also aren't anything to write home about -- a 3.23 goals against average (GAA) and .883 save percentage (SV%) -- but he should be able to perform against a poor Sabres team.

Our projections expect Samsonov to finish the night with 16.7 FanDuel points, the second-most among goaltenders.

Stacks

Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche are almost always a stackable offense, and they're without a doubt the team we want tonight when they face the Detroit Red Wings.

Colorado is a high-powered, high-scoring offense that does not stop. The Avalanche rank 13th with 3.17 xGF/60, but that goes to 1st with their actual goal scoring, topping the league with 3.62 GF/60. The Avalanche also have a 62.72 Corsi for per 60 minutes (CF/60), ranking 11th in the NHL.

They'll face the Red Wings, a team that is struggling suddenly. Over their last 10 games, Detroit has a 63.21 Corsi against per 60 minutes (CA/60) while ranking 27th with 3.38 expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). Alex Lyon, who had been an answer for the Red Wings, is in the midst of a tough couple of starts. The netminder has allowed four goals in each of the last two games and has had a sub-.900 SV% in each of the last three.

It's a perfect time to get the Avs against them.

Stacking this lineup is pretty simple. You'll want to get Nathan MacKinnon ($10,300) and Mikko Rantanen ($9,400) into your lineups. Artturi Lehkonen ($6,200) is a good value with his pairing on the first line and potential to move up to the first power-play unit with Valeri Nichushkin being a game-time decision. Also consider Cale Makar ($8,100) on the backend, as no defenseman offers the same scoring ability as him on a nightly basis.

Value Skaters

Vladimir Tarasenko, W, Ottawa Senators ($5,300)

Editor's note: Since publication, Tarasenko has been traded to the Florida Panthers.

There's a lot of belief that Vladimir Tarasenko will be playing for a different team once the NHL trade deadline comes and goes on Friday, but for now, he's a member of the Ottawa Senators and a value for DFS lineups.

Tarasenko has scored in back-to-back games heading into tonight, having scored 17 goals in total on the campaign. Add in his 24 points, and he's been able to put together 41 points overall, a fine season even if it's a bit underwhelming from where he's been in the past.

Taking on the Anaheim Ducks, there should be a chance for him to find the back of the net yet again with them allowing 3.48 GA/60.

The Senators' winger is the top value per our projections, as he's projected to finish with 15.0 FanDuel points.

Alex Killorn, W, Anaheim Ducks ($4,700)

Alex Killorn has had a fine first season for the Ducks despite missing some time.

When the Ducks face the Senators tonight, plenty of goals could fill the box score. The Senators have had a tough time at keeping the puck out of their own net. Ottawa is allowing 3.56 per night, the third-most in the NHL this season.

Anton Forsberg will be between the pipes for the Senators. He's been bad for much of this year, sporting a 3.29 GAA and .888 SV%.

There's a lot of offensive opportunity for the Ducks, specifically Killorn. In his last three games, the forward has recorded three points. While he's missed some time, Killorn has played in 42 games. He's totaled 9 goals, 15 assists, and 24 points in that span.

The veteran plays top-line minutes (average of 18:35 time on ice) and has a role on the top power play, which is enough for me to like him tonight.

Our projections have Killorn producing a strong output of 11.9 FanDuel points.
