NHL Daily Fantasy Picks and Helper: Thursday 3/7/24

NHL DFS is similar to MLB in terms of how you build lineups, how you view stacking, and how to value players.

Two main points to always focus on in NHL DFS are what lines the players are on and making sure the goalies you are rostering are confirmed as the starters.

Two of the best resources for that are LeftWingLock.com and DailyFaceOff.com. That is where you can find updated forward and power-play lines for each team, along with which goalies are confirmed as the starters.

Using our projections -- which are powered by numberFire -- as a guide, let's take a look at today's slate to find a goalie, some stacks, and value plays for your NHL DFS lineups on FanDuel.

NHL DFS Picks

Goalie to Target

Juuse Saros, Nashville Predators ($7,500)

Unlike yesterday, there's plenty to pick from tonight when it comes to goalies worth targeting. Let's settle on Juuse Saros, who enters the evening with a strong matchup against the Buffalo Sabres.

Saros continues to be the only answer for the Nashville Predators when it comes to keeping them in games. The netminder has made 50 starts this season, the second-most of any player at the position. In doing so, he's totaled a 2.85 goals against average (GAA) and .907 save percentage (SV%). It hasn't been the best season of Saros' career, but he continues to be among the elite and can steal a game on any given night.

Taking on the Sabres, this is a matchup that lines up perfectly for him. Buffalo's strength is getting shots on net, but actually putting it in the net is much different. While the Sabres are averaging 31.09 shots for per 60 minutes (SF/60), they're averaging just 2.86 expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60), the 25th-best in the NHL. That number translates to just 2.88 goals for per 60 minutes (GF/60), also ranking 25th.

Saros is in the driver's seat to put up points in DFS lineups with a matchup like this. Our projections have him finishing the night with 21.6 FanDuel points.

Stacks

Carolina Hurricanes

The stacks for tonight are very strong with the Carolina Hurricanes being the best of the bunch.

Carolina enters tonight with a slate-high implied total of 4.01, an incredible mark, per numberFire's heat map. That should be expected when taking on a Montreal Canadiens team that hasn't been all too good this year.

The Habs have the third-highest expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60) at 3.37. Overall, they're allowing 3.42 goals against per 60 minutes, making for a good night for the Hurricanes.

When talking about the Hurricanes, their dominance is at such an elite level. Carolina leads the NHL with a 69.63 Corsi for per 60 minutes (CF/60). That has turned into 3.24 GF/60 and 3.26 xGF/60, ranking 11th and 7th in those respects.

Entering tonight's game, Carolina has scored three or more goals in three straight games, so there's some momentum. Against a poor team like Montreal, they should be able to thrive.

Stacking this lineup should start with Sebastian Aho ($8,500) and Andrei Svechnikov ($6,700). The top line duo plays the most minutes together with usage on the first power-play unit, as well. On the defensive end, Brent Burns ($5,500) offers some value.

Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers are one of the best offensive teams in hockey. It shouldn't be a shock that a matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets makes them a top stacking option for the slate.

Edmonton ranks 3rd in CF/60 (65.18), 2nd in SF/60 (33.15), 4th in GF/60 (3.5), and 1st in xGF/60 (3.68). Everything about their offense is a machine that you want to be a part of in DFS. And doing so against the brutalColumbus Blue Jackets make it all the better.

The Blue Jackets are bad. In no way are they a good team. That results in them letting their opponents score at a high rate.

Scoring-wise, they're allowing 3.32 xGA/60, the fifth-most in the NHL. And even with that number, it gets worse as Columbus is letting up 3.61 GA/60, which is the second-most. Daniil Tarasov is expected to start for the Blue Jackets. The goaltender has been part of the problem, as can be seen by his 3.58 GAA and .891 SV%.

numberFire's heat map has the Oilers locked in with a 3.93 implied total, the second-most on the 12-game slate.

Connor McDavid ($10,400) is the top projected player of the day with an impressive 24.4 FanDuel points. Stacking him with his linemates of Zach Hyman ($8,900) and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins ($7,500) could make for the best output for DFS lineups tonight. Evan Bouchard ($7,500) is worth considering with his ability to score on the defensive side of the puck.

Value Skaters

Quinton Byfield, W, Los Angeles Kings ($5,900)

Quinton Byfield is locked in as the top value for tonight's 12-game slate.

The Los Angeles Kings have to be pleased with the forward and his breakout campaign this season. After recording just 32 points in his previous two seasons, Byfield has recorded 46 points this year through 59 games. Those 46 points came in the form of 18 goals and 28 assists.

It's been two games since he recorded a point, meaning that he is due to get back on the board. Facing off with the Ottawa Senators should make things all the better for the 21-year-old, as they're allowing 3.54 GA/60.

Byfield is projected for a solid 14.4 FanDuel points, per our projections.

Anders Lee, W, New York Islanders ($4,300)

The New York Islanders are one of the hottest teams in the league, so get in on their success by going with Anders Lee as a value pick.

Lee is no longer the 30-plus goalscorer that he was earlier in his career, but he can still find the back of the net. The Islanders' captain has 16 goals and 10 assists on the season, good for 26 points. He plays a key role for them on the second line and second power play.

The Islanders will be going head-to-head with a San Jose Sharks squad that is allowing 3.84 GA/60 this season, giving Lee and company a chance to fill up the box score.

Our projections are high on Lee for the tilt tonight (12.2 FanDuel points).
