Best Bet

Mets Under 3.5 Runs (+104)

A pair of trying NL East teams will meet up this evening, with the New York Mets (24-35) taking on the Washington Nationals (27-31) for today's Free Game of the Day.

MacKenzie Gore will be on the bump for the Nats, and I like his chances to shut up an inconsistent Mets lineup.

In his third year in the majors, it's safe to say Gore is finally having that breakout season. Coming into the night, he owns a 2.91 ERA, 3.51 xERA, 3.09 SIERA, and 2.97 xFIP (10th-best in MLB) through 11 starts.

Additionally, he sports a resounding 29.1% K% (11th) and 0.77 HR/9. We've yet to see Gore have a bad start, letting up three earned runs or fewer in each of his outings. He's allowed two earned runs or fewer in 9 out of 11 starts, including his last seven straight.

New York could help Gore maintain the status quo. They come in with pretty middle-of-the-road metrics against lefties, including a .240 BA (18th), .308 wOBA (18th), .388 SLG (15th), and a 6.9% walk rate (25th). The Mets have yet to face Gore this season, so I think he has a clear upper hand at home.

Past Gore, Washington's relief has been generating a 3.97 xFIP (13th) and 0.77 HR/9 (5th). Dylan Floro (0.94 ERA, 2.73 xERA), Hunter Harvey (2.08 ERA, 2.47 xFIP), and Kyle Finnegan (1.57 ERA) could help take this game to the finish line.

The Nats have surrendered less than 3.5 runs through nine innings in Gore's last four starts. The Mets, meanwhile, have pieced together less than 3.5 runs in 27 out of 59 games. Given the matchup, that hit rate is encouraging enough for me to back the under.

Best Prop

MacKenzie Gore Over 6.5 Strikeouts (+120)

This is a tall task for Gore, but he has punched out 18 batters across his last two games and has managed to clear 6.5 strikeouts in 5 out of 11 starts, missing by the hook on two occasions. With +120 odds (45.45% implied probability) available, I'm willing to side with him at home.

Dating back to last season, New York's active roster owns a 20.3% K% (20th) versus left-handed pitchers. While this isn't as high as we'd like it to be, there are still some intriguing matchups on deck for Gore.

Mark Vientos (29.9% K%), J.D. Martinez (29.2% K%), and Pete Alonso (22.8% K%) have all shown high strikeout numbers against lefties since last season.

Gore's strikeout rate rises to 30.0% K% against right-handed batters, so he should find success against the aforementioned players.

I have faith that Gore can pitch through this lineup a couple of times, and his 11.05 K/9 (seventh-best in MLB) is no joke. You can also get Gore 6+ Strikeouts at -180.
