MLB Same Game Parlay Bets for Thursday 5/23/24

Toronto Blue Jays at Detroit Tigers

Kevin Gausman Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-132)
Jack Flaherty Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-150)
Alternate Total Runs: Under 9.5 (-250)

Combined Odds: +254

Kevin Gausman is giving up more hard contact than usual -- ranking in the 15th percentile in barrel rate (10.4%) -- but he's still striking out batters at a decent clip in recent outings. The right-handed ace for the Toronto Blue Jays has tallied six-plus Ks in three consecutive starts, and he is slated to face the Detroit Tigers on Thursday.

Entering a clash versus the Blue Jays, the Tigers are recording the eighth-highest strikeout rate (24.0%) against right-handed pitching. Even though Detroit's strikeout rate has declined to 22.5% since the start of May, they are producing the 11th-lowest wOBA (.301), 13th-lowest wRC+ (94), and 10th-lowest ISO (.135) in that span.

Meanwhile, Jack Flaherty has been phenomenal for the Tigers through his first nine starts in 2024. Besides boasting an elite 2.29 SIERA and 15.2% swinging-strike rate, Flaherty is in the 74th percentile in chase rate (31.0%), 97th percentile in whiff rate (35.9%), and 95th percentile in strikeout rate (33.0%).

While the Blue Jays own the seventh-lowest strikeout rate (20.1%) versus right-handed pitchers, Flaherty has pitched six-plus innings in eight of his nine outings. Toronto has also struggled at the plate this month, logging the sixth-lowest wOBA (.295), eighth-lowest wRC+ (92), and seventh-lowest ISO (.130) in baseball.

Given the confidence we're placing in both Gausman and Flaherty, we'll take the alternate under of 9.5 runs in Thursday's Blue Jays-Tigers showdown. On the season, Toronto is 20-27-1 to the over in their first 48 games.

Baltimore Orioles at Chicago White Sox

Gunnar Henderson to Record an RBI (+115)
Baltimore Orioles Over 4.5 Total Runs (-140)
First 5 Innings Result: Baltimore Orioles (-148)

Combined Odds: +266

It's early in the season, but Gunnar Henderson is being given the fourth-shortest odds to win the American League MVP (+500) due to his impressive start to the year for the Baltimore Orioles. Against right-handed pitching, Henderson is sporting a .379 wOBA, .333 ISO, and 150 wRC+ while leading the Orioles in RBIs (35).

Taking that into account, Henderson is primed for another notable performance versus Mike Clevinger and the Chicago White Sox. Aside from Henderson registering at least one RBI in five of his last six contests, Clevinger is tallying just an 18.2% strikeout rate with a 50.0% fly-ball rate and 12.8% barrel rate.

There's a chance we see Henderson record his RBI by way of the long ball as he holds +265 odds to hit a home run.

With Clevinger on the bump, we could see the Orioles plate five-plus runs. Clevinger has surrendered three-plus earned runs in two of his first three starts in 2024 despite not pitching more than 4.2 innings in any game. Chicago's bullpen is also posting the fourth-worst SIERA (4.11), sixth-worst WHIP (1.38), and fifth-worst HR/9 (1.15).

Lastly, we'll side with Baltimore to secure a lead in the first five innings with Grayson Rodriguez slated to make his eighth start of the year. Rodriguez has given up zero earned runs in each of his last two appearances, and the Orioles have held a lead or been tied in the first five frames in five of their last six games.
