Pitcher Breakdown

Today's slate features a bit of a Big 5.

There are five pitchers with a $10,000-plus salary: Chris Sale ($11,500), Nick Lodolo ($10,500), Bailey Ober ($10,400), Ronel Blanco ($10,300), and Logan Gilbert ($10,200). They all project pretty well, via numberFire's model, but Sale stands out a bit both by salary and projection (36.5).

Sale also stands out by SIERA (2.56) -- with Ober (3.54), Lodolo (3.55), and Gilbert (3.59) in their own tier before Blanco (4.30). Despite that, Blanco has the best matchup -- against the Miami Marlins.

With five viable options at the top, whether anyone at a lower salary can match them is the real question.

numberFire's model likes Zac Gallen ($9,700) but also Brayan Bello ($8,300) against the Oakland Athletics and Colin Rea ($8,000) against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Rea's matchup against the Pirates is intriguing, as Pittsburgh's 85 wRC+ against righties is 26th in the Majors, and their 24.7% K% in that split is fifth-highest.

The A's also have a subpar wRC+ (92) against righties but own a 26.8% strikeout rate in the split, which is second-highest.

If looking to save salary, Bello and Rea have the right matchup to justify, and that can allow for multiple big-salary stacks on a large slate.

Stack Breakdown

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox square off with Joey Estes, owner of a hefty 51.5% fly-ball rate and a less-terrible-but-still-not-great 32.3% hard-hit rate. His SIERA sits at 4.73 through 226 batters faced.

Rafael Devers ($4,000) and Tyler O'Neill ($3,400) have the highest batter projections at numberFire today (with Jarren Duran; $3,700) also in the top five. Devers has +215 odds to hit a home run on Dinger Tuesday; O'Neill's odds are +250.

David Hamilton ($2,900) can offer some stacking salary relief while getting exposure to the lineup with today's highest implied team total (5.60).

Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds are hosting the Colorado Rockies and Cal Quantrill. Quantrill holds a 6-6 record on the year and does keep the ball on the ground a good bit (46.7%) but lacks punchout power (17.5% strikeout rate) and lets up hard contact (33.9%).

That makes the Reds intriguing, especially with reasonable salaries near the top for Jonathan India ($3,000), Jeimer Candelario ($3,000), and Tyler Stephenson ($2,600).
