Pitcher Breakdown

On today's eight-game main slate spanning the middle of the day, only three pitchers have salaries in the five figures: Grayson Rodriguez ($10,800), Seth Lugo ($10,600), and Luis Gil ($10,200). There are actually only three more in each of the $9,000 and $8,000 tiers, too.

So it's a gradual drop off -- but also a few bigger arms. Who stands out?

Projections-wise, it's Rodriguez (a slate-best 34.9 projected FanDuel points) in a matchup against the New York Yankees. New York owns only a 99 wRC+ against RHP the last 30 days with a roughly average K% (22.2%). Lugo and Gil project for 28.0 points apiece, so while they're not poor plays, they aren't in the same tier as Rodriguez.

Further, numberFire's model is high on Andrew Abbott ($9,300) against the Miami Marlins; Abbott is projected for 33.1 FanDuel points. The southpaw gets a great matchup, as Miami ranks 28th in the MLB in wRC+ against LHP the last 30 days (66) while also sitting third in K% (28.5%).

Christian Scott ($7,900) is another way to get away from the top arms by salary in a matchup with the Colorado Rockies. Colorado is 26th in wRC+ the last 30 days versus RHP (93) while holding a top-10 K% (23.6%) in the split. Scott's 4.35 SIERA should be enough to hold them down in this matchup.

Gavin Williams ($6,700) is a bit of a bet against the rest of the arms on the main slate. If none of them put up a monster game, then Williams could possibly match their production at a fraction of the salary. He's facing a Tampa Bay Rays team that is top-10 in K% (against RHP this season) while sitting 21st in wRC+ (94). He holds a 16.7% strikeout rate in 9.1 innings this season but was at 23.5% across 82.0 frames in 2023.

Stacks to Target

With high-salaried pitchers not being a super high priority, allocating salary to stacks is a lot easier today than most.

  • Philadelphia Phillies (5.38 implied total) -- Mitch Spence is 15th in hard-hit rate and 13th in called-strike-plus-whiff rate (CSW%) on the main slate; Phillies have a 118 wRC+ the last 30 days vs. RHP.
  • Cincinnati Reds (4.95) -- Edward Cabrera holds a 6.84 ERA and a 4.66 xERA and has a 13.2% walk rate; Cincinnati has the second-best implied total of the main slate.
  • New York Mets (4.66) -- League-best 137 wRC+ and .226 ISO the last 30 days vs. RHP. Ryan Feltner is 12th in K% and 11th in xERA on the main slate.
  • Baltimore Orioles (4.73) -- Facing a fly-ball pitcher who is 9th in SIERA on the main slate; O's have a 125 wRC+ the last 30 days vs. righties.
