Czech Republic vs. Georgia Analysis

Both of these sides lost their opening matches.

Georgia fell 3-1 to Turkey in one of the more entertaining matches of Euro 2024 thus far. On expected goals (xG), Georgia lost 3.0-1.4, pretty much right in line with the result.

Czechia had a 1-0 lead on Portugal -- one of the tourney's top teams -- but ended up losing by a 2-1 score, with Portugal netting a late winner. However, by xG, Portugal were very deserving winners as Czechia mustered just 0.4 xG while Portugal amassed 1.9 xG.

This is Georgia's first major tournament, and despite the loss, they played pretty well against a solid Turkey side. On paper, Georgia is one of the weakest teams in the field -- they looked like it in qualifying, getting only two wins across eight matches, both over Cyprus -- but their opening-match performance raised some eyebrows.

The Czech Republic was so close to a vital point versus Portugal but couldn't hang on. In qualifying, Czechia was aided by a weaker group, but they took advantage of it, losing just once in eight matches.

Opta's model gives Czechia a 51.7% chance to win while putting the odds of a draw (24.7%) nearly equal to the odds of a Georgia win (23.5%).

MasseyRatings isn't as bullish on the Czech Republic but still lists them as the favorite, handing Czechia win odds of 45%.

Czechia's -115 moneyline, per the Euro 2024 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, implies win odds of 53.5%, higher than what either model has.
