Euro 2024 Betting Picks

Germany vs. Scotland (3 PM ET)

Under 2.5 Goals (+122)

The European Championship finally kicks off on Friday, with just one match on the first day. It will involve the hosts, Germany, who have disappointed in their last three major tournaments.

They will face Scotland in Munich, after the tournament's opening ceremony. This match features two teams that don't have a striker who will bring a lot of fear to their opposition.

Germany's form is a mixed bag heading into this tournament. They have won three of their last four matches, but going back a bit further, they lost six of 11 matches in 2023. Scoring goals has been a problem for them, as they have scored more than two goals just once in the past games.

The plan for Germany is to use Kai Havertz as a false nine -- basically a striker who drops deep and gets other attackers involved rather than just trying to score goals himself. This worked successfully for Spain in Euro 2012, but they only scored more than two goals twice in six matches.

Germany will look to bring in wingers Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala into play to score a lot of their goals. This is a strategy that could pay off, but these two players don't have a track record of scoring much for Germany. They have combined for just three goals in 47 international appearances.

Scotland's qualifying campaign was highlighted by a hot goal-scoring run by Scott McTominay. The midfielder had seven goals, which was tied for the fifth-most. Other than these goals, in his 49 games for Scotland, he has scored just once.

This is a problem for the Scots. John McGinn has the most international goals of anyone on the team with 18. No player has double-digit goals, and they lost Lyndon Dykes -- who was likely to be their starting striker -- to injury in the lead up to the tournament.

Scotland has little incentive to go guns blazing in this match. If they can get out of this match with a draw, that would be a great result. They likely could qualify for the knockout round if they win just one of the two remaining games after this one. It also makes sense for them to remain defensively responsible if they go down because goal difference is a huge factor in making the next round.

Getting +122 odds on the under is a good price based on the team's personnel and how the match could play out.

Prop Bets

Ilkay Gundogan 1 or More Shots in Each Half (+130): Germany should be on the front foot in this game, even if they don't find the back of the net too often. Because of that, I like betting on their attacking players taking a good amount of shots.

Ilkay Gundogan isn't the most attacking player but he will have more of an attacking role with Germany than he does with Barcelona. He averaged two shots per game during the World Cup and faced tougher teams than Scotland during that tournament.

Gundogan will play behind Kai Havertz, but if Havertz is dropping deep as a false nine, it could leave space for Gundogan to make runs from midfield which could involve him shooting. The other path to Gundogan getting shots is from direct free kicks, which he is definitely a candidate to take.

Since he's the player in the front four for Germany with the longest odds, he's the one I want to bet on for a shot in each half.
