American Athletic Conference Tournament Best Bets

Florida Atlantic (+160)

The Florida Atlantic Owls are fresh off a dazzling run to the Final Four in 2023. A season ago, this program compiled 35 total wins under head coach Dusty May. In 2024, May is embarking on his sixth campaign in Boca Raton. However, FAU has never won the conference tournament in this grouping. After all, 2023-24 was the Owls first year competing within the AAC.

Florida Atlantic did well to win the C-USA tourney in its final season as a member. Fast-forward to now, and the Owls are still powered by a potent offensive attack. In 2024, FAU produced 83.0 PPG. That is the 15th-highest rate in men's Division I.

At numberFire, Florida Atlantic is rated as the 31st-best team in the country. That rating also lands the Owls as tops in the American. On the current KenPom rankings, FAU (+16.98 AdjEM) is slightly further down at 37th overall. Still, no one from the AAC is above them.

With a pricing of +160 odds, the Owls are favorites at FanDuel Sportsbook to win the American Athletic Conference Tournament. As the No. 2 seed here, FAU will also have the luxury of extra rest; Florida Atlantic will not resume play until Friday (March 15th) in the quarterfinals.

Memphis (+440)

As last year's AAC Tournament champions, the Memphis Tigers are ready for another strong postseason. 2024 marks head coach Penny Hardaway's six season leading his alma mater. Through that span, Memphis has twice qualified for the big dance, winning one AAC tourney along the way.

Memphis played to a 22-9 overall record. Still, in conference play, the Tigers struggled a bit. Versus fellow American Athletic Conference foes, Memphis went 11-7. That translates to the No. 5 seed for the upcoming tourney.

To commence the conference tournament, Memphis will start action in the second round (March 14th). For their potential opponent, the Tigers must await the winner of Wednesday's match between Rice and Wichita State. Memphis handled Wichita State in both head-to-head games this season but lost to Rice in February on their own floor.

Hardaway's current group is seen as the 68th best team in the country, per numberFire's men's college basketball power rankings. Additionally, FanDuel Sportsbook has Memphis listed with +440 odds to win the AAC Tournament. When surveying this group, are the Tigers actually the American's second-best side?

SMU (+490)

Out in Dallas, the Southern Methodist Mustangs have produced an impressive turnaround year over year. Last season (which was head coach Rob Lanier's first with the program), SMU went 10-22. In the current campaign, the Mustangs are thriving. They have nearly reciprocated last season's record, currently showing 20-11.

In the AAC standings, Southern Methodist finished right behind Memphis. That means the Mustangs will enter this week's tourney as the No. 6 seed. Regardless, FanDuel Sportsbook has SMU priced at +490 odds in this market.

According to KenPom, SMU (+12.66 AdjEM) falls within the 83rd percentile -- or ranks 63rd of 363 teams -- within men's college hoops. Similarly, numberFire has the Mustangs (9.00 nERD) ranked 56th overall. Behind a stingy defensive clip of 67.6 PPG allowed, Southern Methodist will be a program to watch over the next week.

With an opening-round bye, SMU will take on whoever wins Wednesday (March 13th) between Temple and UTSA. The Owls and Roadrunners combined for a 10-23 AAC record in 2024. Seemingly, neither of those teams should pose a threat to the Mustangs advancing.
