Chiefs and Lions Set for High-Scoring Matchup to Open 2023 NFL Season

The 2023 NFL season should start off with a bang.

Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs, led the NFL in scoring at 29.2 points per game and were the only team to average more than 400 offensive yards per game (413.6).

The Patrick Mahomes-led offense remained virtually unstoppable even while rebuilding its pass-catching depth chart.

The Detroit Lions' high-octane offense wasn't too far behind them, though. They ranked fifth in points per game (26.6) and fourth in yards per game (380.0) during a resurgent season by quarterback Jared Goff.

Super Bowl Odds and Win Totals

According to the Super Bowl odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, the Chiefs are the favorites to earn another Super Bowl win at +600 odds (14.3%).

The Lions' +2200 odds (4.4%) are ninth-best in the NFL.

Kansas City's win total is set at 11.5, same as the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers, yet only the Chiefs have odds in favor of the over (-128) at that mark. So, yes, the Chiefs are the team to beat in the NFL entering the season.

Detriot's over/under is at 9.5 with -122 odds on the over, so they're no slouches, either.

NFL Opening Day Betting Odds: Chiefs vs. Lions

Via the NFL betting lines at FanDuel Sportsbook, the Chiefs are favored by 6.5 points (-115) and are -260 (72.2%) to win outright in Week 1.

Using historical Super Bowl odds to estimate point differential, the Chiefs enter the season with an expected point differential of +6.26 with the Lions at +1.95, a gap of 4.31 points before accounting for homefield advantage.

So while it's looking likely that the Chiefs will start their title defense 1-0, they should need to score plety of points to do so.

The total is set at 51.5 with -115 odds on the over.
