2026 Spinster Stakes Preview

Key Takeaways:

  • The five-horse Spinster field is small but deep, led by Fully Subscribed off a 9¾-length Personal Ensign romp, while Counting Stars, Immersive, and Regaled bring strong Grade 1/2 form into the 1⅛-mile Breeders’ Cup Distaff prep.
  • The pace could be the key: Snowyte and Immersive are likely to push forward, Counting Stars can be aggressive from the inside, and that could set up well for a horse capable of stalking just behind the speed.
  • Fully Subscribed is the clear top pick at 4-5, bringing the best current form and a 4-for-6 record at 1⅛ miles while getting an ideal stalking setup behind the speed.
  • Immersive is the main upset candidate at 7-2, with proven Keeneland form and a favorable distance, though she’ll need to handle the pace pressure from Snowyte and Counting Stars.
  • Counting Stars offers another option at 5-2 if her price drifts, as she is proven at 1⅛ miles and has the tactical speed to contend, but facing older horses for the first time makes the step up a significant test.

Fillies and mares get a local course-and-distance prep race for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Sunday, October 4, at Keeneland in the Spinster Stakes. The 1 ⅛-mile race on the Keeneland main track offers a $650,000 purse – as well as an automatic bid to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff for the winning horse, as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series.

The Spinster Stakes drew a field of only five, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in quality. The morning-line favorite is Fully Subscribed, who comes out of a 9 ¾-length romp in the Personal Ensign (G1) at Saratoga. Counting Stars, who won two Grade 1 races against her own age group at the Spa this summer, faces older foes for the first time. Juvenile champion Immersed, a top-level winner at Keeneland two years ago, tries to do that again. Regaled was beaten by less than a length by Immersive in her last start, and Snowyte will try to take a step forward from the outside gate.

Spinster Stakes winners often make a major impact at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. Three of the last four Breeders’ Cup Distaff winners prepared in the Spinster: Scylla in 2025, Idiomatic in 2023 and Malathaat in 2022. Others to sweep the double include Blue Prize (2019), Inside Information (1995), Bayakoa (1989, 1990), Sacahuista (1987), and the very first Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner, Princess Rooney (1984).

Spinster Stakes Prep Race Results

Everyone in the Spinster comes out of a graded-stakes race.

Two horses come out of the Personal Ensign (G1) on August 29 at Saratoga Race Course. Personal Ensign, the odds-on favorite that day, drew away powerfully to win by 9 ¾ lengths. The only other horse coming out of that race is Snowyte, who finished fourth – well beaten by Fully Subscribed, but only half a length out of the runner-up slot.

Regaled makes her first start since June 27, when she closed for second to be beaten three quarters of a length by Immersive in a sloppy edition of the Fleur de Lis (G2) at Churchill Downs. Immersive has raced once since then; she was a well-beaten third behind Splendora after pressing the pace in the Locust Grove (G2) on September 12, also at Churchill Downs.

Counting Stars, the lone sophomore in the field, comes out of a straight three-year-old race and steps up to face older horses for the first time. She was most recently third in the 1 ¼-mile Alabama (G1) at the Spa on October 22, and cuts back to a more proven distance.

2026 Spinster Stakes Contenders

This is the field for the 2026 Spinster, in order of each horse’s post position.

  1. Regaled: Being a closer in a five-horse field is usually not great, though this is one of the less bad situations for being one. After all, there’s a lot of speed in this bunch: Snowyte has to go, Immersive’s best recent efforts have been on the front end, and even Counting Stars is at her best on the front end – and being inside of those two may force her hand. Fully Subscribed is usually just off the pace – tactical, but sometimes close enough to at least push the issue. This should add up to a faster-than-usual pace for such a short field. She is probably not good enough to get all the way there, but this bodes well for a share.
  2. Counting Stars: The cut back to 1 ⅛ miles suits her nicely. She does have the versatility to be on the lead or off the pace … but being drawn inside of both Immersive and Snowyte could make things tricky. She isn’t bad from inside gates – she wired them from the fence two back in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) two back and stalked and pounced from the two-hole three back, even with the speed drawn outside her. It’s not impossible, but don’t take a short price given what a big ask stepping up against good older horses is.
  3. Immersive: A juvenile champion, she didn’t quite run to that at three, but she has been in good form at four. She has won just once in four starts but has usually put up a good effort, and did beat Regaled in the Fleur de Lis two back. This 1 ⅛-mile distance is likely her best, at least at this point in her career. The big question for her is pace. She does her best work when she can be part of the pace, but with Snowyte outside her and Counting Stars inside, she will have to work hard to get her best frontrunning trip.
  4. Fully Subscribed: It’s nice to be the best horse in the race. It’s nice to have the best of it from a pace perspective. And, it’s really nice for both of these things to be the case. Fully Subscribed rides a two-win streak into the Spinster, a race that drew a very good field but no Nitrogen to deal with. It’s good to be forward at Keeneland, but with as much speed as was drawn in here, Fully Subscribed’s style of sitting just off the pace looks perfect: watch the battle, make her mov e out on the far turn or approaching the turn for home, and tap into that 1 ⅛-mile acumen to roll clear.
  5. Snowyte: Expectations have always been high for this daughter of good Magic, as evidenced by the fact that she ran in graded-stakes races as a juvenile before even breaking her maiden. However, she has yet to tally a graded-stakes win and has been no match for Fully Subscribed in her last two starts. Speed is good to have at Keeneland, and perhaps she’d be a little interesting if she were going to get her own way up front, but with Immersive and even Counting Stars in the field, that isn’t going to happen. In short, she looks like pace, but not a major win contender.

Spinster Stakes: 3 Best Bets

These are the three best bets in the 2026 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland:

1. Fully Subscribed (4-5)

The price will be short, but sometimes the honor is in knowing when the best horse will win. Fully Subscribed comes into the race in the best form, and has never run a bad race in her nine-race career. 1 ⅛ miles is her best trip: in six starts, she has four wins and two seconds, including a win and a runner-up finish at the top level.

If a horse like this is going to get the worst of it from a pace perspective, it’s worth betting against. On the other hand, she’s getting the absolute best of it from a race flow standpoint. There are a couple of horses with go-go-go speed: Snowyte and Immersive basically have to go, and though Counting Stars is a little more tactical, she is perhaps best on the lead. She is also facing older horses for the first time. Whereas, Fully Subscribed reliably finds a spot just behind the pace, she fires whether the pace in front of her is fast or just reasonable, and she is a four-year-old with a lot of experience running against these grown-up distaffers.

2. Immersive (7-2)

The only horse in the field with a win at Keeneland, Immersive won the Alcibiades (G1) on opening weekend of the meet two years ago, on the way to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies glory and an Eclipse Award. So, there’s no question she likes the place.

She has yet to threaten for more hardware as an older horse, but she has been better at four than at three. And, that Fleur de Lis was a good effort. Though it was in the slop, she not only did the dirty work early but held on to take the money late. If she can do something like that over a fast track, she should be in contention throughout. The pace won’t be easy – Snowyte will be hitting the gas from the outside – but Immersive is the better horse. Speed on the Keeneland dirt can be a very good thing, and especially if a speed bias unfolds through opening weekend, that will be great news for Immersive to be a live upset candidate.

3. Counting Stars (5-2)

Counting Stars is the best of the three-year-old dirt route fillies this year, but now she faces older horses for the first time in her career. She should be well prepared; her trainer Mark Casse isn’t afraid to take shots like this with a good horse, instead of finding an easier straight-sophomores spot. But, even then – he ran Nitrogen in this spot last year, and she ended up getting upset by an older long shot.

With that out of the way? If Fully Subscribed takes so much money that she’s in the 2-5 neighborhood and Counting Stars drifts up from the morning line? She would be playable. She is forward but not one-way speed; she is well proven as a 1 ⅛-mile horse, and her best races are fast enough to be a win candidate if she can replicate them against this older company.
