The New York Yankees are fighting to stay in playoff contention this season and currently sit 7.5 games back in the AL East division with a record of 33-31. The bad news seems to just keep coming as the team received a worrisome injury update on starting pitcher Luis Severino.

Yankees News

Severino has been working hard to get back on the mound following Tommy John surgery. However, he was removed in the second inning of his rehab start with High-A Hudson Valley on Saturday due to a groin injury. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on Sunday to diagnose the extent of the injury.

The Yankees had originally hoped Severino would rejoin the major league squad by mid July, but that date may get pushed back now. This team has struggled to keep a reliable starting rotation together and are already without Corey Kluber for a significant amount of time because of a right shoulder strain.

The 27-year-old righty has pitched in just five games for the Yankees since signing a four-year, $40 million extension in February 2019. Although Severino has had problems with injuries in the past, he sports a 3.46 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 88 starts during his career.

Don't be surprised if the Yankees target starting pitching at the MLB deadline this season in hopes of finding some upgrades for a postseason push. They currently have odds set at +220 to win the division and odds set at +1100 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
