The New York Yankees are looking to turn a corner on their 2021 MLB season after an important three-game sweep against division rival Toronto Blue Jays this pas week. Although the three-game sweep was overall a bright spot for this underperforming squad, the Yankees endured a bit of an injury scare on Thursday night.
Two-time All-Star shortstop Gleyber Torres exited Thursday's 8-4 win after just 3.0 innings with lower back stiffness. Nothing concrete has been released on Torres' injury status yet, but manager Aaron Boone also revealed he doesn't believe it's anything serious.
Gleyber Torres Injury
The Yankees will reevaluate Torres on Friday and may potentially give him the night off out of precaution after playing in 26 straight games. Regardless, the 24-year-old shortstop has been an important piece to New York's struggling lineup, which ranks just 24th in the league in runs scored (269).
On the year, Torres is slashing .260/.342/.344 with 3 home runs, 23 RBIs and 9 doubles. He's played in 59 of the Yankees' 68 games thus far, only missing action due to planned days of rest.
The Yankees sit firmly in third place in the AL East with a 36-32 overall record, trailing behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays by 6.0 games. Still, FanDuel Sportsbook's latest MLB odds give New York the best odds of AL East teams (+1100) to win the 2021 World Series..
