When Cam Akers' season was wiped out before it started due to a devastating ankle injury, Darrell Henderson's fantasy outlook saw an obvious boost as the presumed new No. 1 in the Los Angeles Rams backfield.

But Sean McVay's recent comments make it clear that Xavier Jones could be a thorn in his side, and that Jones has some real upside as a fantasy football sleeper as well.

Xavier Jones Fantasy Football Value

Jones is certainly still the No. 2 RB on the depth chart, with an uphill battle ahead if he wants to overtake Henderson, but already seeing a role is a great sign. This is especially true because one area McVay praised was his pass protection — an area in which struggles can really hurt any RB's ability to see the field.

The last two seasons have also shown that McVay and the Rams may not be too excited about Henderson despite investing a third-round pick in 2019. After all, they immediately turned around and spent a second-round pick on Cam Akers in 2020, giving him the keys to the backfield.

Of course that's still a much bigger investment than they made in Jones, who was an undrafted free agent in 2020.

Still, if this coaching staff likes Jones and isn't enamored with Henderson, that opens the door for this to develop into a true committee, or even for Jones to take over.

Jones is going off the board at RB58 according to FantasyPros' average draft position (ADP) data. In that range you're not going to find many running backs with the kind of fantasy upside that Jones brings to the table.

Jones checks in at 149th overall in The Duel's top-200 fantasy football player rankings for 2021.
