When the New York Jets selected Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, fans were sure the team had found its franchise quarterback. Two years into his career, he's done nothing to dispel that notion, though he hasn't exactly looked like a surefire superstar, either.

Still, that's likely more of an indictment on the situation surrounding Darnold than anything else. In fact, one quick look at Darnold's high school highlight tape proves the USC product has always had big-time talent.

Sam Darnold High School Highlights

At San Clemente High School, Darnold was a dominant player on the grid iron and the basketball court. He even was named the South Coast League's MVP twice for his prowess as a basketball player.

Of course, football was where Darnold really shined. As a senior, he threw for 3,000 yards and 39 touchdowns, relying on that athleticism to add another 800 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. He was named a four-star recruit, and would eventually commit to USC.

Darnold looked like a special player the moment he debuted for the Trojans, tallying 3,086 passing yards and 31 TDs as a redshirt Freshman. He followed that up with a 4,143-yard, 26-TD campaign as a sophomore before being drafted No. 3 overall by the Jets.

He hasn't put it all together yet, but Darnold's high school highlight reel proves there's plenty of untapped potential there. With Tom Brady out of the AFC East, some improvements from Darnold could help bring a divisional title to New York for the first time since 2002.
