In a week that saw Joe Burrow beat Auburn and Jalen Hurts rack up 500 yards of total offense, the biggest story in the Heisman race may be the movement of several quarterbacks out of the running and the rise of Ohio State's defensive lineman Chase Young, who now sits at +8000 to take home the trophy, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
At the top, Burrows and Hurts remain tied as the favorites at +175. Close behind them is the injured Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa at +250. Rounding out the top 5 are Josh Fields at +800 and JK Dobbins/Jonathan Taylor, both at +4000.
Perhaps the biggest news from the week, though, is who dropped out of the race.
QBs Sam Ehlinger, Jake Fromm, Bo Nix, and Shea Patterson all dropped out of the running. For Ehlinger and Nix, the drop comes after losses that saw their team's playoff chances plummet. No. 15 Texas fell to TCU, while No. 9 Auburn fell to No. 2 LSU. Meanwhile, Patterson is out of the running despite leading the No. 19 Wolverines to a convincing win against No. 8 Notre Dame. Finally, Fromm falls out after being on bye this week.
As all these quarterbacks fell, one player who saw their rankings rise is Chase Young. The only defensive player in the running, as mentioned above, Young is currently +8000 after putting up six tackles, four sacks, and two forced fumbles in a win over No. 13 Wisconsin. With that performance and the players falling around him, Young is up to sixth in the Heisman odds standings.
If we continue to see top QBs lose and Ohio State keeps rolling, Chase Young has an opportunity to leapfrog the offensive players ahead of him and could make a real run for the Heisman.
