Update 8/25 2:20 p.m. EST: Travis Etienne has been diagnosed with a "significant tear", which is potentially a season-ending injury.
We're still a couple weeks out from the start of the regular season, but one of the worst parts of fantasy football is already making an impact: injuries.
The latest is a very worrying Lisfranc injury to Jacksonville Jaguars rookie running back Travis Etienne.
A foot injury at the RB position can have a serious impact, and that suddenly gives a huge boost to the fantasy football outlook for both Carlos Hyde and James Robinson.
Carlos Hyde Fantasy Outlook
Hyde has long been a player that NFL coaches seem to like way more than fantasy football managers do. He's often written off as a plodding runner who will surely cede work to whoever fans view as the more "talented" back. But fans' analysis doesn't mean much if coaches don't agree.
We saw it in Cleveland when the Browns started Hyde over Nick Chubb early in Chubb's rookie season. We then saw it in Houston when the Texans refused to use Duke Johnson in a rushing role in favor of Hyde.
He's certainly not likely to be the No. 1 RB in the Jaguars' backfield, but if Etienne misses time he does seem like a safe bet to carve out a sizable role alongside 2020 undrafted free agent James Robinson.
James Robinson Fantasy Outlook
Etienne going down could also be big for Robinson's fantasy outlook, despite Hyde threatening to take some volume.
Robinson was an absolute workhorse as a rookie in 2020, handling 240 carries and seeing 60 targets. His efficiency wasn't anything special, however, and that's why the Jags drafting a first-round RB and signing Hyde has been worrying for his fantasy outlook. With a likely drop in volume coming, he's not likely to be anywhere near as productive as he was last year.
Considering Hyde hasn't seen more than 20 targets in a season since 2017, however, Robinson would almost certainly serve as the Jags' primary receiving RB with Etienne out. That would be incredibly valuable from a fantasy football standpoint.
We'll have to stay tuned for a more concrete update on Etienne, but fantasy managers should certainly have a close eye on the Jaguars' backfield as the season approaches.
