As part of ongoing makeup dates because of the brief MLB lockout, the Chicago White Sox will kick off their series against the Kansas City Royals with a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Sitting firmly in a three-way AL Central race with the Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins, Chicago must try and rack up wins against a lesser divisional opponent.

MLB teams are allowed to use a 27th man on their roster during doubleheaders, and the White Sox revealed they'll use this spot on a top pitching prospect from Triple-A Charlotte.

White Sox Roster News

Chicago announced right-hander Davis Martin will serve as the team's 27th man on Tuesday, naming him the starter in Game 2.

Martin currently ranks No. 16 overall in MLB.com's list of top White Sox prospect, and is the sixth-highest pitcher on this list. Martin actually made his MLB debut earlier in the year against the Royals, and management must have liked what they saw. The 25-year-old tossed five innings of one-run ball, striking out seven on 91 pitches back on May 17.

The youngster ended up with a loss in that outing as the White Sox offense could only muster one run. He earned a pair of other starts, and some work in the bullpen, in both June and July bouncing between Triple-A and MLB as an effective "taxi squad" member.

Across 30.1 innings in the big leagues, Martin touts a serviceable 4.75 ERA with 6.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

The White Sox are favored to take both games of this doubleheader, according to MLB odds on FanDuel Sportsbook. FanDuel lists Chicago as a -136 moneyline favorite in Game 1, and -142 favorite in Game 2.
