The Kansas City Royals have had a fairly forgettable start to the 2022 MLB season. Fortunately, the club is slated to get a boost from its top prospect when they face the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.
The Royals have confirmed that 2017 second-round pick MJ Melendez will make his MLB debut against the Cardinals. The 23-year-old catcher will handle designated hitter duties in what is a moment that Kansas City fans have been looking forward to for quite some time.

Excitement for Melendez's eventual MLB debut ramped up after he led all minor league players with 41 home runs last season, splitting the year across Double- and Triple-A.
Unfortunately, Melendez hasn't had that same spark to begin the 2022 campaign. He only has 13 hits and two HRs in 78 at-bats with Triple-A Omaha, slashing an abysmal .167/.286/.295 along the way. Still, he showed what he's more than capable of last season and his current slow start won't temper fans' excitement.
Dakota Hudson will take to the mound for the Cardinals in Melendez's debut. The crafty righty is 2-1 with a 2.75 ERA in four starts, limiting left-handed batters to a .118 batting average and just one earned run.
The Royals could use a boost from Melendez to help thwart the Cardinals. FanDuel Sportsbook is currently listing Kansas City as the -102 moneyline underdog, whereas St. Louis is the -116 road favorite.
