The Tennessee Titans entered the offseason in need of help in the secondary after finishing dead last in passing yards allowed per game in 2022 (274.8). The front office has opted not to make a major splash in free agency, but rather sign young cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting to a one-year deal.

Titans Free Agent Signing

The deal is worth up to $5 million as Murphy-Bunting is expected to slide into a starting role opposite Kristian Fulton.

The 25-year-old burst onto the NFL scene as an All-Rookie selection after he tallied 44 tackles, 8 pass breakups, 3 interceptions and 1.0 sacks with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019.

Murphy-Bunting came back to post a career-high 70 tackles in 2020 before seeing his playing time decrease over the next two seasons. He was stuck behind starters Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean, yet still managed to log 74 tackles, 10 pass breakups and 2 interceptions across 21 games in 2021-22.

It was Murphy-Bunting's work in coverage that stood out in 2022, though. He allowed only 21 catches on 41 targets for a total of 186 yards (2 touchdowns). Allowing only 8.9 yards per catch is impressive, as today's league is full of players capable of breaking tackles and taking it all the way to the house.

Playing on a safe prove-it deal could help both the Titans and Murphy-Bunting given that Tennessee is projected to have $130 million in 2024 cap space -- the fifth-highest mark in the NFL. For now, Tennessee has odds set at +280 to win the AFC South in 2023, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
