There aren't many divisional rivalries that have been as closely fought as the one between the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians. Chicago leads the way with a 1,116-1,111 record in the all-time series, but Cleveland got the upper hand by winning 12 of 19 head-to-head games in 2022.

Each team enters the offseason looking to improve through free agency and get in position to win an AL Central title. While the White Sox have a number of pros entering the open market themselves, poaching one player away from the Guardians could benefit the team in more ways than one.

Chicago White Sox Free Agency

Austin Hedges served as Cleveland's starting catcher this season, regularly hitting in the middle of the lineup and providing reliable defense behind the plate. He enters the free agent market this offseason and it just so happens the White Sox lack depth at the position. There's a clear fit here.

Yasmani Grandal is under contract for one more year in Chicago and comes with a cap hit of $18.25 million. That means the White Sox may not be able to spend the big bucks to bring in his replacement. Turning to a proven veteran like Hedges to split the starts with Grandal in 2023 makes more sense.

Hedges tallied 26 runs scored, 7 home runs, 30 RBI and 2 stolen bases in 105 games with Cleveland in 2022. It's worth noting he also led the league in sacrifice hits (10), showcasing his willingness to do whatever it takes to win. Hedges has smacked a total of 66 home runs during his eight-year career.

The Guardians would only have Luke Maile and Bo Naylor at catcher if they cannot find a way to bring back Hedges. Keep in mind the catcher position is thin when it comes to free agents, meaning the White Sox have a chance to deal a great blow here. A blow that could help them bounce back in 2023.
