The Pittsburgh Steelers cannot afford any substantial injuries on defense down the playoff stretch, which made linebacker Alex Highsmith's departure in Week 14 a scary one. Fortunately, the second-year pro seems to have avoided major injury after going through initial tests on Friday morning.

Alex Highsmith Injury Update

Highsmith left after just 31 snaps on Thursday night and did not return for the rest of the game. His hamstring issue has since been diagnosed as a bad contusion above his knee. With Pittsburgh set to have 10 days before they suit up again, it is possible that he will not have to miss any time.

This is great news for the Steelers given the role Highsmith plays on this team. The former Charlotte standout has started all 12 games this season and racked up 54 tackles (12 for loss), 3.0 sacks and 10 quarterback hits. Overall, Highsmith has been on the field for 73% of Pittsburgh's defensive snaps.

The Steelers failed to record a sack on defense for the first time since Week 3 and the loss of Highsmith along with TJ Watt was a big reason why. Both players will hopefully be back for a Week 15 matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

Pittsburgh remains a long-shot to make the playoffs in what is a crowded AFC conference with odds set at +690, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
