A new era for the Pittsburgh Steelers began when Ben Roethlisberger retired at the end of the 2021 NFL season. They did sign Mitchell Trubisky to a two-year, $14.25 million contract this offseason, but that's hardly a long-term solution to their situation under center.

The good news for Steelers fans is that help could be on the way at the 2022 NFL Draft. ESPN's Mel Kiper is currently projecting Pittsburgh to make a pick that the fanbase will absolutely love in his latest 2022 NFL mock draft.

Steelers Mock Draft

Kiper is currently projecting the Steelers to use the 20th overall pick at next month's draft to select Liberty Flames QB Malik Willis. Considering how many experts see him as having the highest ceiling of all quarterbacks in this year's class, it's no wonder why Pittsburgh fans should be thrilled.

The 22-year-old gunslinger was solid in his two years at Liberty. He suited up in a total of 23 games, completing 377 of 604 passes for 5,107 passing yards and 48 touchdowns to 18 interceptions.

What makes Willis an even more attractive option is his mobility. While his passing game could use some improvements, he rushed the ball 338 times over the last two campaigns for the Flames, racking up 1,822 rushing yards and 27 TDs.

Willis is likely a year or two away from being NFL-ready, which is why the situation in Pittsburgh works so well for him. The Steelers already have Trubisky, Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins on their QB depth chart, meaning the coaching staff could work with Willis for a season or two before they feel like he's ready to take the reins.

The Steelers still have several areas they need to improve on, so there's no guarantee that they'll go with a quarterback in Round 1. Still, there's the potential for something great if Willis does fall to them at No. 20.

The 2022 NFL Draft is slated to begin on Thursday, April 28.
