The 2022 MLB season has come to a conclusion, meaning front offices around the league are now going to start shifting attention to offseason free agents. 131 players were officially declared as free agents on Sunday, including six Houston Astros pros that made a crucial impact this past season.
The list is full of stars on a team still celebrating their 2022 World Series championship. A few key members of the current dynasty will hit the open market in outfielder Michael Brantley and 1B/DH Yuli Gurriel.
Gurriel was a star during the playoff run with his impressive .347/.360/.490 slash line alongside 2 home runs and 4 RBIs. Brantley was an All-Star in two of his last four seasons with the Astros but was hampered by injuries this year.
Another postseason star in Rafael Montero joins the list. Montero joined the franchise in 2021 as an average relief arm. That call changed in 2022 when Montero pitched to a dominant 2.37 ERA. He made 10 appearances throughout the playoff to the tune of a 1.93 ERA.
Houston also sees two catchers in Christian Vazquez and Jason Castro enter free agency, as well as super utility man Aledmys Diaz.
While the Astros deserve to take a few days to celebrate their championship, the front office has a number of decisions to make heading into 2023. For now, the Astros have +600 odds (2nd) to win the 2023 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
