The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have placed the franchise tag on wide receiver Chris Godwin. While fans will surely be happy to see the 25-year-old back in action, the move does create some uncertainty about the future of some other key free agents.
Namely, edge rusher Shaquil Barrett and LB Lavonte David. With that in mind, here are the three most likely destinations for Barrett in free agency.
Shaquil Barrett Free Agent Destinations
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Godwin news does not necessarily mean that Barrett is done in Tampa Bay. There are plenty of moves this team can make to create enough cap space to sign the pass-rusher. Tom Brady's contract is reportedly being re-structured, and releasing William Gholston would free up $5.5 million, for example. If Brady agrees to a team-friendly deal, as we've seen him do all throughout his career, it's not a stretch to think Barrett could return.
2. Las Vegas Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders need a legit top-tier pass-rusher. Last year, the team racked up the fourth-fewest sacks in the league (21). Barrett is the exact type of splashy signing Jon Gruden seems to love, and he'd fix the Raiders' pass-rushing woes in a hurry. He'd also finally give the team a viable replacement for Khalil Mack.
1. Indianapolis Colts
If he does leave Tampa Bay, though, it'll likely be for a serious payday. That means there just aren't many teams with the cap space to give him the deal he's surely looking for. The Indianapolis Colts are one of a handful of teams with enough money, and they're probably the only top-five team in terms of available space with a shot to win a Super Bowl. Putting Barrett on a front seven that already includes the likes of DeForest Buckner and Darius Leonard could be downright scary.
