Emmanuel Rivera made an immediate impact for the Kansas City Royals in his big-league debut on Monday, collecting two hits in four at-bats. Things took a disappointing turn on Tuesday, though, as Rivera was forced to leave the game – on his birthday, no less – with left wrist pain.

Now the promising 25-year-old is headed for a stint on the injured list.

Emmanuel Rivera Injury Update

Rivera has been placed on the 10-day IL with a left hamate fracture. It's certainly not what Rivera or the team was hoping for following his call-up to the majors.

The young first baseman brought a lot of optimism when the Royals needed it. They'd fallen to 33-43 before calling up Rivera, and his productive first game was a reason to get excited. He earned that promotion to the roster after racking up 9 homers and 19 RBI in the month of June down at Triple-A Omaha.

Rivera initially landing on the 10-day IL may mean he'll be back in the lineup sooner rather than later, though every fracture heals differently. Hopefully the 25-year-old slugger gets another chance to prove he's worth a serious look at the major-league level.
