Opening Day for the 2022 MLB season is less than a month away and the Cincinnati Reds are one team that needs to continue fleshing out their roster. One area that the club could still improve is the starting rotation.

Fortunately, there are still several quality starting pitchers available in free agency. One that the Reds should consider signing is veteran lefty J.A. Happ. Not only would grabbing him help their rotation but it would also be a way to get back at the rival St. Louis Cardinals.

Reds Free Agency

Happ's 2021 campaign was a mixed bag as he split it between the Minnesota Twins and Cardinals. He went 10-8 in 30 starts, however, his 5.79 ERA and 1.477 WHIP left a lot to be desired.

Having said that, Happ was more efficient with the Cardinals after the Twins traded him away. He went 5-2 in 11 starts with St. Louis, tallying a 4.00 ERA and 1.278 WHIP. In other words, a bounce-back campaign with Cincinnati isn't out of the question.

The Reds don't need Happy to be the ace of the rotation, making his skillset perfectly adequate for the No. 4/5 role. Mike Minor is the club's only southpaw starter at the moment, which gives Cincinnati even more of a reason to sign the former MLB All-Star.

The truth is that the Reds need more help to compete in the NL Central. FanDuel Sportsbook is currently giving them +850 odds to win the division title, placing them behind the Milwaukee Brewers (-125) and Cardinals (+200).
