Raiders Taking Measured Approach to Derek Carr Contract Extension Talks

The new regime in place for the Las Vegas Raiders has shown they're not afraid to make bold moves, as evidenced by the blockbuster trade for Davante Adams. That fearlessness adds an interesting wrinkle to Derek Carr extension talks that will continue this offseason.

It turns out the Raiders are taking a measured approach to negotiations with Carr.

New Las Vegas head coach Josh McDaniels said Carr will need to decide on "what's best for him" and the Raiders will "do what's right for the team," adding that he hopes both sides can find a "sweet spot" to remain together.

These comments have certainly raised eyebrows given how open-ended they are. McDaniels seems to frame the two parties as being on opposite sides, which could be concerning if one group isn't willing to compromise.

McDaniels also mentioned trying to "build around" Carr, and the Adams trade definitely follows in that mindset. Still, this regime's willingness to shake things up means Carr extension talks could end in a variety of ways.

Several stars have swapped teams this offseason due to contract negotiations breaking down, which makes the Carr situation one to keep a close eye on as the 2022 season approaches.
