After reaching the postseason for the first time since 2011, the Philadelphia Phillies are ready to rumble. Philadelphia released its starting lineup ahead of Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, which is set to kick off at 2:07 p.m. ET on Friday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Phillies Lineup Game 1
Philadelphia's lineup is loaded with power from top to bottom, starting at the top with leadoff man Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber paced the National League with 46 bombs this year, second in MLB only behind Aaron Judge's record-setting 62.
He's followed by Rhys Hoskins (30 HR), J.T. Realmuto (22 HR), 2021 NL MVP Bryce Harper, and 2021 Silver Slugger winner Nick Castellanos. That's a lot of firepower in the top half of the batting order, which explains why Philly ranked third in the NL in slugging percentage this year.
The back half of the lineup is less scary but still features quality bats in Alec Bohm (.280 AVG), two-time All-Star Jean Segura, and rookies Bryson Stott and Matt Vierling. It's a mostly veteran offense with some youth at the bottom, which seems like a sensible strategy for a high-pressure game such as this against a team with tons of playoff experience.
Zack Wheeler will be on the mound for Philadelphia after going 12-7 with a 2.82 ERA and 163 strikeouts in 153 innings this year. This is the first postseason appearance for the 32-year-old, who was injured during the New York Mets' playoff runs in 2015 and 2016.
With such a deep lineup backing a reliable arm, it's not surprising to see the Phillies listed as slight road favorites in St. Louis (-110) on FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds.
