Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Islanders News and Notes
The Islanders look to close out their series with Pittsburgh following a win in which they never led in regulation. New York may have been outplayed in Game 5 in Pittsburgh, but a win is a win, and now they have the chance to pick up perhaps their last ever series clincher at Nassau Coliseum.
The Islanders will move out of the Coliseum for good into the brand new UBS Arena about 11 miles down the road next season. But before they start packing, they'll have about 2,200 more fans in Uniondale than the 6,800 allowed for Games 3 and 4.
While the Isles' faithful will be willing them to the next round, New York will have to improve on some lapses to give their home fans what they are looking for. New York, one of the best defensive teams of the year, allowed a ridiculous 50 shots on Monday. On the offensive end, they had a 30-minute drought where they collected just five shots. Puck luck certainly is a thing, and they have to feel at least a little lucky to have escaped Pittsburgh with the 3-2 win.
Josh Bailey and Ilya Sorokin undoubtedly get much of the credit and can split the "game puck" after this one. The rookie netminder made 48 saves in over 80 minutes, while Bailey ended it just 51 seconds into the second overtime with his third of the playoffs.
Ernest Hemingway said, "you make your own puck luck." OK, I added "puck" to that line, but the Isles did precisely that in Game 5. Jordan Eberle's game-tying goal, which was New York's first shot after that half-hour dry spell, came off a Pens turnover almost nine minutes into the third. Bailey followed suit, picking off a Tristan Jarry clearing attempt to pot the game-winner.
Take away Game 4, and New York has led for just 31 seconds in this series and is certainly taking a page out of Hemingway's book against Sidney Crosby and company. Crosby, who led the Pens with 24 goals and 62 points this season, has been nearly invisible in this series. He did notch an assist on Bryan Rust's go-ahead goal in the middle frame, but it was just his second point of the series after scoring a goal in Game 1. The Pens will need more from their captain in Game 6 to stave off elimination and force a Game 7 back in Pittsburgh.
The over is 6-2 in eight head-to-head meetings in New York, while the under has hit in three of the past four in the series. In seven of ten matchups, the favorite has come out on top, while New York got the only plus-money wins with OT upsets in Games 1 and 5. Overall, the under is 8-2-2 in the Islanders' last 12 following a win while Pittsburgh's gone over in ten of 13 road games.
