The Stand Van Gundy experiment in New Orleans lasted just one year. The veteran head coach was fired on Wednesday after a disappointing 31-41 record this past season and rumors of a lost locker room.
The New Orleans Pelicans now search for a replacement for this talented roster, headlined by young stars Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. With New Orleans expected to interview a slew of candidates, let's take a look at three potential replacements for Van Gundy as the head of the bench in New Orleans.
3. Jacque Vaughn
Jacque Vaughn was part of the interview process last offseason before Van Gundy was ultimately hired. Vaughn is currently serving as an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets, a team favored to win the NBA Championship this season, a position he has held since the 2016 season. He was the head coach for the Orlando Magic for three seasons from 2012-2015, but saw little success, going 58-158 in that span. But six seasons later, Vaughn is garnering attention again for another shot. A high IQ journeyman point guard during his playing days, Vaughn profiles as a potentially successful coach, and certainly has the experience this team should be looking for.
2. Terry Stotts
Terry Stotts name hasn't been mentioned as a candidate within the rumor mill just yet, but it would be shocking if he wasn't at very least considered. You could make a strong argument he's the best coach currently available. After nine mostly successful seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, Stotts could never get the Blazers over the hump in the playoffs. However, he has a winning pedigree and players seem to really respect him. He also has plenty of experiencing raising two young stars as he did for Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. That experience could prove vital to success in New Orleans long term.
1. Jason Kidd
Another coaching vacancy, another rumor that Jason Kidd could be a strong candidate. It's like clockwork at this point. Kidd is currently serving as a Los Angeles Lakers assistant, and already turned down the chance to interview for the Trail Blazers vacancy earlier this offseason, but he could be attracted to the potential in New Orleans. No other team has Zion. Giannis Antetokounmpo credited Kidd with his development and was reportedly devastated when Milwaukee fired him. If Kidd can do for Zion and Ingram what he did for Antetokounmpo, then this search shouldn't take long, Kidd is the no-brainer hire.
