As the NFL preseason rolls on, the Carolina Panthers continue to pit Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold against each other. The quarterback position has been one of the Panthers' areas of weakness in recent years, so they're hoping the competition eventually yields the best results.

Mayfield and Darnold had a chance to gain some ground during a joint practice with the New England Patriots on Tuesday. Unfortunately, neither signal-caller could deliver during the two-minute drill portion of practice, leading to some brutal results.

Panthers Training Camp News

Mayfield played the two-minute drill with Carolina's first team, bringing them right to the red zone, according to Panthers writer Joe Person. Unfortunately, the former Browns QB couldn't get the job done from there, tossing the ball away once while throwing a pair of incompletions.

Much to his dismay, Darnold couldn't find a way to top that underwhelming performance. While the former third overall pick had a "couple of nice throws," his two-minute drill possession ended with a tipped interception. Needless to say, these aren't the reports that Panthers fans want to hear.

Both Mayfield and Darnold saw playing time during the Panthers' 23-21 victory over the Washington Commanders last week. Mayfield completed 4-of-7 passes for 45 yards while Darnold connected on two of his three passing attempts for 16 yards and a touchdown.

At the end of the day, most fans expect Mayfield to be the starting quarterback in 2022. He's looked much better than Darnold throughout their careers and it's tough to imagine him being happy leaving Cleveland, only to be the backup to a lesser QB.

With only two preseason games remaining, time is running out for the Panthers' duo to make their cases. Friday's game against the Patriots should provide fans with a clearer idea of how the situation could unfold.

Panthers vs Patriots Odds (Aug 19)

The Patriots are usually a tough opponent, however, FanDuel Sportsbook actually lists the Panthers as the 2-point road favorites. If Carolina is going to want to make good on their odds to cover (-110), Darnold and Mayfield must step up or step aside.
