It's fair to say Carolina Panthers fans head into this upcoming NFL season with some newfound excitement as they hope a change of scenery is all quarterback Sam Darnold needs to shine. Well, it looks like NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms feels the same way given Darnold's spot in his QB rankings.
Simms ranks Darnold No. 19 among all NFL quarterbacks and ahead a few other notable NFC South signal-callers including Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill. The 24-year-old gunslinger also comes in a whopping 13 spots ahead of former Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater, whom the team traded away this offseason.
Simms gave reason to his ranking on Pro Football Talk explaining how Darnold has elite athleticism and was simply being held back by the mediocrity of the New York Jets. Panther fans can't help but be excited to learn that someone in the media is supporting their starting quarterback.
Darnold has become a polarizing player in his young career as people cannot seem to decide if he has the potential to be a leader of a franchise or not. Overall, the former No. 3 pick has a career record of 13-25 and has thrown 45 touchdowns compared to 39 interceptions across three seasons.
It'll be interesting to see if Darnold can lead Carolina to the playoffs for the first time since 2017 when Cam Newton was leading the way. The Panthers have odds set at +270 to reach the postseason and odds set at +7000 to win the Super Bowl, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
