NFL OTAs are beginning to start across the league and a notable group of receivers was missing when the Green Bay Packers took the practice field on Tuesday. In fact, none of the team's top pass-catchers showed up including by Pro-Bowler Davante Adams and No. 2 WR Allen Lazard.
Packers WRs Absent from OTAs
Many top players sit out voluntary OTAs, but it is rare that an entire position group does so. Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur said afterwards that he doesn't believe it is was a coordinated effort and that he had spoken to each player individually.
One possible explanation to the occurrence regards a possible Adams' contract extension. The four-time Pro Bowler is set to become a free agent following the 2021 NFL season and is in line for a massive payday. He could've taken the day off in order to avoid an injury risk.
While there have been negotiations between him and the Packers front office, no extension has been signed yet. It is also a possibility that the rest of the wide receivers sat out to help make a statement, but no one truly knows what happened. It's best not to jump to conclusions.
With the murky situation surrounding Packers starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the last thing the team needs is another distracting story that takes away from football. At this point, it'll just be interesting to see if any of the WRs are back when Packers OTAs continue on Thursday.
