The Baltimore Orioles didn't give fans much to get excited about on Saturday, falling 7-2 to the Oakland Athletics. Starting pitcher Wade LeBlanc got shelled early, and things never got much better.
That loss has led to some exciting news, however. LeBlanc has been designated for assignment, and pitching prospect Zac Lowther has been called up in his place.
Lowther was selected in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft, and MLBPipeline.com has him as the No. 11-ranked prospect in the Orioles' system.
The 25-year-old has never pitched above the Double A level, but he made 26 Double A starts in 2019, turning in a strong 2.55 ERA while averaging 9.4 strikeouts and 3.8 walks per nine innings.
The journeyman LeBlanc pitched just 6 2/3 innings for the Orioles in 2021, posting an awful 9.45 ERA. Those struggles will also remind fans of what he did in 2020, putting up an 8.06 ERA. O's fans won't miss the southpaw.
Projected to remain at the bottom of the AL East all season, FanDuel Sportsbook has the Orioles as +20000 underdogs in their odds to win the division.
