Teams across the MLB are scrambling to complete deals now that the trade deadline is just over 24 hours away. The Chicago White Sox are expected to be one of the buying teams now that a recent turnaround has helped them secure the 11th-best 2022 World Series odds (+4500) on FanDuel Sportsbook.
The White Sox have multiple areas that they must improve, but offensive production from the outfield is the most glaring. That's why it makes sense for Chicago to pursue Boston Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez as a last-minute addition to help with the club's World Series aspirations.
White Sox Trade Rumors
With the Red Sox struggling, it makes sense for them to trade Martinez rather than losing him for nothing as a free agent in the offseason. MLB insider Mike Petriello reported last week that the 34-year-old would be a great fit for the White Sox, making it a deal within the realm of possibility.
AJ Pollock and Gavin Sheets have struggled in left and right field, respectively. Both players are inconsistent at the plate at best, whereas Martinez has nine home runs and 40 RBIs with a .288/.354/.462 slash line in 87 games, earning his fifth All-Star nod along the way.
While Martinez has exclusively played as the designated hitter this year, he has a total of 7,228 outfield innings played with a .983 fielding percentage. He's far from a defensive juggernaut out there, but he can certainly handle his own. Besides, he can always share DH duties with Andrew Vaughn and Eloy Jimenez.
The Red Sox are always looking to compete, so they'll likely want Chicago prospects that are close to being MLB-ready. Names like outfielder Oscar Colas and shortstop Jose Rodriguez could be decent starting points, while top White Sox pitching prospect Norge Vera could be another name to watch.
There's going to be some decent competition for Martinez's services. If the White Sox come out on top, their World Series odds could see a boost because of it. Fortunately, fans don't have to wait long to see if a deal materializes because the trade deadline takes place on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. ET.
