The 2019-20 NHL season kicks off tonight with a four-game slate that includes the defending Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues hosting the Washington Capitals. Despite winning their first Stanley Cup in franchise history last season, the Blues have just the fifth-best odds to repeat as champs, sitting at +1500, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
Atop the odds are the Tampa Bay Lightning (+700), who had the best record in the league during the 2018-19 season. The Presidents' Trophy winners were swept out of last year's playoffs in the first round by the Wild Card Columbus Blue Jackets.
NHL Stanley Cup Odds 2020
While the Lightning begin this season's quest for the Stanley Cup as the favorite, not far behind are the Toronto Maple Leafs at +950 and the Vegas Golden Knights at +1050. The top-three teams, according to the odds, all suffered first-round exits in last year's playoffs. The Boston Bruins, who have the next best odds (+1300) are coming off a loss in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Blues.
Beyond the top five are another seven teams with 20-to-1 odds or better. That grouping includes the 2018 Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals (+1800).
As last year's Stanley Cup Playoffs proved, the NHL is extremely unpredictable, meaning these odds are sure to shift throughout the 2019-20 season while these teams vie for Lord Stanley's Cup.
