Rudy Gobert started the season as the favorite to win his fourth NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in the past five seasons. Nearing the halfway point of the regular season, Gobert (+270) sits just behind Draymond Green (-110) in the race for the league's best defensive player.
Green started the season at +3300 to win the award after finishing third in voting last season. He's moved up to become the favorite over the two most recent Defensive Player of the Year award winners. Giannis Antetokounmpo (+1000) won the award two seasons ago.
NBA Rookie of the Year favorite Evan Mobley is among the top-5 to win Defensive Player of the Year. Anthony Davis has fallen down the list with his recent knee injury putting him on the sidelines for at least a month.
The Defensive Player of the Year award has been won by a big man in 17 of the past 20 seasons. But Suns swingman Mikal Bridges (+1800) has gone from huge longshot to challenger with some key defensive performances including holding Steph Curry to one of his worst shooting nights ever a month ago. He may not win the award, but Bridges should make the NBA All-Defensive team.
Golden State leads the league in defensive efficiency rating, and the Warriors are at or near the top in net rating, opponents’ field-goal percentage, defensive rebound percentage, shots contested, deflections and more, thanks to Green's defensive play.
