The NBA playoffs are set to begin tonight, but it is never too early to take a look at some of the marquee free agents this upcoming offseason. One name that's come up over the past couple of weeks is Chicago Bulls power forward Lauri Markkanen.
Markkanen will hit restricted free agency this offseason and already made it clear his plans to test the open market. Of course, the restricted tag offers the Bulls an opportunity to match any offer that Markkanen garners on the market. As a stretch four, his role took a step back with the arrival of Nikola Vucevic, but Markkanen's still a 40+ percent shooter from deep that's averaged 7.1 rebounds per game in his career.
Check out the most likely teams to sign Markkanen in restricted free agency this offseason.
3 Lauri Markkanen Free Agent Destinations
1. Orlando Magic
While Markkannen was kept out of the Vucevic midseason trade, it's possible he still finds himself with the Orlando Magic next season. The Magic might be interested in bringing a similar style of player in to replace Vucevic during this team rebuild. Markkanen won't carry the same price tag that Vucevic would have, but may be a nice replacement option for a Magic team that finished 21-51 this year.
2. Chicago Bulls
With restricted free agency, there's a distinct possibility that Markkanen remains with the Bulls. After all, this team could have sent him to Orlando in the Vucevic deal but opted to keep the young talent around. In four years with the Bulls, Markkanen owns career averages of 15.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game alongside a 52.9 effective field goal percentage.
3. Portland Trail Blazers
When the season wraps up, the Portland Trail Blazers will have some questions surrounding their depth at forward and center. Portland has four bigs hitting free agency this offseason (3 unrestricted) including aging forward Carmelo Anthony and center Zach Collins. If the Trail Blazers can find a favorable contract for Markkanen, he may be a better fit here. After all, Markkanen plays a very similar style game to Collins.
