The New York Mets are sitting pretty atop the National League East with a 55-34 record as the MLB All-Star break quickly approaches. Improving at the deadline is still crucial, though, and insider Jon Heyman sees the team eyeing an offensive upgrade. He even linked the Mets to an All-Star outfielder.

New York Mets Trade Rumors

The Mets have joined the list of suitors for Kansas City Royals' Andrew Benintendi. The New York Yankees were the expected favorite to land the 28-year-old until the news came out that he is unvaccinated. That is obviously a brutal detail given how often the Yankees visit the Toronto Blue Jays.

Benintendi is in the midst of a career-best season, slashing .317/.386/.401 to go along with 37 runs scored, 14 doubles and 37 RBI across 87 games played. His 102 hits would rank first on the Mets and his .786 OPS would rank fourth. Keep in mind Benintendi took home a Gold Glove award in 2021, too.

When it comes down to it, Benintendi would give the Mets someone capable of shining both at the plate and in the field. Slating him or one of Mark Canha, Brandon Nimmo or Starling Marte at designated hitter instead of OF would also be a massive upgrade over JD Davis and Dominic Smith.

Adding one of the hottest bats in the league to the lineup could be exactly what the Mets need to pull away from the sneaky Atlanta Braves down the stretch. For now, manager Buck Showalter's team has the fourth-best odds to win the World Series at +700, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
