Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Jose Berrios is viewed as a prime trade target for contenders ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline. With Minnesota sporting a disappointing 26-39 record, tied for last in the AL Central, the Twins will be likely sellers at the deadline.
And the latest news regarding Berrios' contract does nothing to quiet the trade rumors surrounding him.
Joes Berrios Trade
Talks of an extension between the club and their ace have been dormant in recent weeks. While contract matters aren't usually a priority during the season, Minnesota should be eager to lock up Berrios on a long-term deal if they saw him as important to their future. Instead, this further adds to the belief that Berrios could be headed to a new team by the deadline.
Berrios has been dominant to start the 2021 campaign. He has a 7-2 record with a 3.49 ERA and 81 strikeouts over 77 1/3 innings pitched. He has one year of arbitration eligibility left before becoming a free agent in 2023.
The chance to nab a 27-year-old starter in his prime should mean there'll be plenty of suitors for Berrios ahead of the deadline.
