The St. Louis Cardinals have been one of the stronger National League teams this season. Despite their success, they still trail the Milwaukee Brewers by two games in the NL Central race, leaving the Cardinals looking for extra help ahead of next week's deadline.

One direction that the Cards could go in is adding another power bat to their lineup. If that's the direction that general manager Mike Girsch wants to head in, MLB insider Mike Petriello sees Washington Nationals slugger Josh Bell as the perfect fit for St. Louis.

Cardinals Trade Rumors

The Cardinals haven't struggled to produce runs this season, averaging 4.59 per game (No. 9). Nevertheless, there's a clear production drop-off after Nolan Arenando and Paul Goldschmidt. While both superstars have 18 and 24 home runs, respectively, Juan Yepez is the only other Cardinal with a double-digit HR total. (11)

If he joined the Cardinals today, Bell would rank third in both home runs (13) and RBIs (51). His .302 batting average would also trail only Goldschmidt (.335). The fact that the 29-year-old is a switch-hitter is only the icing on the cake. That's the type of versatility that contenders love.

When it comes to where he'll fit in, Bell would be a big upgrade over Albert Pujols at the designated hitter spot. Yes, Pujols has a big emotional attachment to the Cardinals, but it's hard to imagine St. Louis going far with a 42-year-old DH batting just .226.

Bell is a free agent at the end of the year, meaning the Cardinals likely won't have to give up too many prospects to land him. Nevertheless, many teams will be calling the Nationals about him, so it'd be in St. Louis' best interest to act sooner than later.

Cardinals World Series Odds

Oddsmakers still think that the Cardinals have a ways to go before they're one of the top championship threats. FanDuel Sportsbook is listing St. Louis at +4000 odds (No. 10) to win the 2022 World Series.
