After a slow start to the 2022 MLB season, the Boston Red Sox have turned things around, clawing their way to the top wild card spot in the American League. There's still a lot of work left to be done before their postseason berth is secured, likely leading them to find additional help in the trade market.

One route the Red Sox could head down is improving their bullpen. If that's the case, MLB insider Mark Feinsand has Boston pursuing a certain AL East rival reliever: the Baltimore Orioles' Jorge Lopez.

Red Sox Trade Rumors

The Orioles have been one of the worst teams in the Majors this year and one of their top trade chips is Lopez, who is making $1.5 million this season. He's also under control for the 2023 and 2024 campaigns before becoming a free agent in 2025.

The Red Sox have been using Tanner Houck as their closer in recent weeks and while he's done a solid job, they could afford to upgrade him. Lopez would certainly fit that bill.

After spending much of his early career as a starter, the 29-year-old righty has a personal-best 0.75 ERA and 0.806 WHIP in 31 appearances this season. He's averaged nine strikes in as many innings pitched and has given up just three earned runs in 36 frames of work.

Trading with a rival isn't as big of a faux pas as it was before, but the Red Sox would likely need to offer a bit more than other interested teams for the Orioles to consider a trade. Still, no doubt adding Lopez to the Boston bullpen would help solidify the Red Sox as a championship threat.

Red Sox World Series Odds

Adding Lopez is also something that the Red Sox could do to help legitimize themselves in oddsmakers' eyes. After all, FanDuel Sportsbook is listing Boston as having +3600 odds (T-14) to win the 2022 World Series.
