The Atlanta Braves were the talk of the league in early June when they ripped off a 14-game winning streak, but they still sit only 1.5 games up in the second NL Wild Card spot. Making a few upgrades at the trade deadline could give this team the boost it needs to win back-to-back World Series titles.
MLB Insider Mark Feinsand expects Atlanta to be in the market for a starting pitcher and Zach Davies fits the mold of a potential target. The current Arizona Diamondbacks starter is only owed $1.5 million in 2022 and has a mutual option for the 2023 season, making him a perfect rental for the Braves.
Atlanta Braves Trade Rumors
Davies did not get off to a good start this season, posting a ERA close to 5.00 prior to the start of June. However, he has found a way to turn it all around as of late. Over his last five starts, the 29-year-old has logged a 2.56 ERA, struck out 25 batters and pitched seven-plus shutout innings twice.
It's worth mentioning that Atlanta's current rotation only features four pitchers with more than six starts to their name this season. The Braves have also seen Ian Anderson and Charlie Morton struggle to replicate their success from last year. Both pitchers have posted ERAs of 4.60 or worse.
Not only would acquiring Davies give manager Brian Snitker an established arm to slide into the rotation, but it provides him with a veteran to use in tough playoff situations as well. For now, Atlanta is tied for the sixth-best odds to win the World Series at +1300, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
