The Miami Dolphins' quarterback situation is nothing short of a mess ahead of their Week 6 date with the Minnesota Vikings. No. 1 QB Tua Tagovailoa is still dealing with a concussion, while backup Teddy Bridgewater was concussed just one snap into his Week 5 outing.

Insider Barry Jackson reports that Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is "planning on starting Skylar Thompson" against the Vikings. Though McDaniel added that Bridgewater could clear concussion protocol before Sunday, all signs point to the rookie third-stringer drawing his first NFL start.

Dolphins Roster Rumors

Thompson — a seventh-round pick in April — made his NFL debut in relief for Bridgewater last week. The Palmyra, MO native wound up playing 66 snaps, completing 19-of-33 passes for 166 yards and an interception in Miami's 40-17 loss to the New York Jets.

The former Kansas State product grabbed a lot of attention during the preseason. Appearing in three games (one start), Thompson racked up 450 passing yards, five touchdowns and a 138.4 passer rating. It might have only been in exhibition action, but it still proves that he could have something special deep down inside.

Thompson might be a downgrade from the two QBs ahead of him, but he does have a chance to succeed this week. The Vikings might be 4-1, but they're tied for giving up the 10th-most passing yards this season. With weapons like Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill at his disposal, Thompson could do some unexpected damage.

The good news for Dolphins fans is that Thompson doesn't seem to be a long-term fix under center. Tagovailoa is set to return to practice on Wednesday (albeit, in a limited fashion) and could be back in Miami's lineup sooner than later as long as his recovery continues to progress.

Vikings vs Dolphins Odds

Thompson is going to need the debut of a lifetime if he hopes to be victorious at Hard Rock Stadium this Sunday. As it stands, his Dolphins are 4.5-point home underdogs to the Vikings, according to FanDuel Sportsbook's latest odds.
