The injury news surrounding New Orleans Saints wideout Michael Thomas seemed positive this morning, but he has now been ruled out for his Week 5 Monday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Another absence for Thomas means teammates Tre'Quan Smith and Emmanuel Sanders continue to boast improved fantasy football outlooks.
Thomas has been on the shelf with an ankle injury since Week 1. Considering the Saints are on bye in Week 6, it's not a huge surprise that they're electing to hold him out for one more game to make sure he's fully healthy for a return.
As the obvious No. 1 receiving option in New Orleans when he plays, Thomas' absence frees up plenty of volume for Smith and Sanders on the outside.
In three games without Thomas, Smith and Sanders are tied with 17 targets each. Sanders has turned that volume into 11 receptions, 167 yards and 1 TD, while Smith has converted his targets into 13 receptions, 182 yards and 2 TDs.
The Chargers rank below-average against the pass this year, checking in at 18th in Football Outsiders' pass defense DVOA rankings, and if you were relying on Thomas then plugging either Smith or Sanders into your starting lineup instead will help you salvage some value for the week.
