The New York Mets had a busy offseason bringing in high-priced talent in the form of several star talents such as Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga and David Robertson. There was little to no regard for the franchise's 2023 payroll as all focus falls on building a championship roster.

But, free agency is not the only area of roster construction that costs money.

On a call Tuesday afternoon, Mets GM Billy Eppler dodged a question around paying several of New York's homegrown star talent.

When asked about potential extensions with Pete Alonso or Jeff McNeil, Eppler simply "wouldn't say" if he's had talks yet. "I'm not a big believer in talking about those types of things... publicly."

It's a pretty funny sentiment on the heels of New York's failed negotiations with Carlos Correa. Owner Steve Cohen revealed the news of Correa's "contract" publicly before the ink was fully dry. And now, Correa is back with the Minnesota Twins.

Lesson learned for Cohen and his front office, who are keeping quiet on the discussions with Alonso and McNeil.
