Matt Ryan Makes High-Upside Mid-Round QB Target Based on Current ADP in 2019 Fantasy Football Drafts

Quarterback is often one of the most overlooked positions in fantasy football, since there are only a dozen QBs starting each week in 12-team, one-QB leagues.

One of those likely 12 is Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons, but he's seemingly not getting enough appreciation in 2019 fantasy football drafts. Leading one of the NFL's most prolific passing offenses last year, Ryan put up numbers that were strikingly similar to those from his 2016 MVP campaign.

Ryan also has some of the best weapons in football, led by All-Pro wide receiver Julio Jones, who led the NFL in receiving yards last season. The receiving corps got a major boost in 2018 with the addition of rookie Calvin Ridley, giving Jones his best complimentary WR since the days of Roddy White. Ridley had an impressive 64-catch, 821-yard, 10-touchdown line last season and is projected to have even bigger numbers in year two.

The Falcons' passing game is rounded out by slot receiver Mohamed Sanu and tight end Austin Hooper, two of the best third and fourth options you will find in the NFL. Having running back Devonta Freeman back healthy this season, after injuries limited him to just two games in 2018, should aid Ryan's upside as well. From 2015 to 2017, Freeman averaged 54.3 receptions per season.

Despite all of this, Ryan is still the sixth quarterback off the board, according to average draft position (ADP), which equates to pick 69 overall. Those who wait until the top five QBs are off the board should pounce at the chance to take Ryan in the middle rounds of upcoming 2019 fantasy drafts.

The veteran QB should also benefit from playing a staggering 13 of his 16 games indoors this upcoming season. The three outdoor games will all be in warm-weather locations (Tampa Bay, San Francisco and Carolina), meaning Ryan will avoid the cold and wind all year – more great news for his potential fantasy owners as well.

Ryan is a mid-round fantasy pick with top-three upside in 2019. If you can hold out and draft him around pick 70, he could help lead your fantasy team to a title this upcoming season.
