The 2021 MLB season has not gone the way that the Miami Marlins envisioned it would. After making the National League Division Series in 2020, the Marlins sit at 24-28 and are 5.0 games behind the New York Mets for the NL East lead. Aside from their struggles on the field, Miami was dealt some bad injury news regarding on of their starting pitchers.
Sixto Sanchez has missed the entirety of the season as he's been dealing with right shoulder inflammation. In fact, the righty hasn't pitched in a game since Game 3 of the NLDS. Unfortunately, it looks like he's about to be out of action for a while longer.
Sixto Sanchez Injury Update
Sanchez had been taking part in a pitching program since Mid-April, however, he's being temporarily shut down for the next few days as he's re-aggravated some discomfort in his shoulder. Obviously, this isn't what Marlins fans wanted to hear. However, something to be optimistic about is that he had just been cleared to join the bullpen, so, hopefully, this setback isn't anything major.
The 22-year-old starting pitcher went 3-2 through seven starts in his rookie campaign. He wound up pitching through 39.0 innings, recording a 3.46 ERA and 33 strikeouts. When all was said and done, Sanchez finished 7th in NL Rookie of the Year voting. The hope is that he can pick up right from where he left off last year.
The Marlins currently have the worst odds to win the NL East at +2500, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Whether Sanchez is back in the starting rotation or the bullpen, his return would go a long way in helping Miami get back into the postseason race.
