Apparently Marcus Mariota is Sucking It Up at Raiders Practice

When the Las Vegas Raiders signed Marcus Mariota this offseason, some speculated he was being brought in to take Derek Carr's job as the starting quarterback, or at the very least challenge him for it.

However, as training camps begin and we get early looks at how teams are operating and preparing for the season, it appears Mariota is a long way from taking over as Las Vegas' starter. In fact, it sounds like he's having some throwing issues and isn't even in the conversation for playing time.

Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports that "the short throws aren’t pretty, while the longer throws have been hit and miss" in reference to Mariota. While Tafur also said he was told Mariota didn't look great in practice with the Titans, missing short throws against light defense or no defense isn't a great sign for him getting game time unless something happens to Carr.

Regardless, you have to consider Mariota one of the league's top backups, even if he isn't close to taking over Carr's job. The season is a long way away and rust is surely a factor for everyone in training camp this year. You'd have to imagine Mariota will improve from here, especially once he gets more familiar with the offense and his receivers.
